RJMS Health Care Accountants continue to proudly work together with Sheffield Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre to raise their public profile while promoting health and fitness. This month the focus is on vitamins and minerals, demystifying these crucial components of our diets.

What are They & Why do we Need Them?

Vitamins are organic compounds that are essential for supporting normal physiologic function.

Minerals comprise a vast set of micronutrients and are considered essential in the macro form of around 100mg/day and the micro form of around 15mg/day.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can create or exacerbate chronic health conditions!

Vitamins

Vitamins are generally categorised as either water or fat soluble. 

Water soluble:

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine), Vitamin B9 (Folic acid), Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin), Vitamin H (Biotin), Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid).

Fat soluble:

Vitamin A (Retinoids), Vitamin D (Calciferol), Vitamin E (Tocopherol) ,Vitamin K.

Minerals

As mentioned, minerals are categorised as either macro or micro.

Important macrominerals:

Calcium, Magnesium.

Important microminerals:

Iron, Zinc, Chromium, Fluoride, Iodine.
